Critical Thinking and Media Literacy in an Age of Misinformation

Abstract

The author, working with students in a small, rural West Texas community college, developed modules to help students develop better critical thinking skills and be better consumers of information in this age of misinformation. The modules were created to engage students in topics on critical thinking, fallacies and bias, how to identify reliable information, how to identify the dangers of social media, and conspiracy theories. The modules are now included in all of the Effective Learning classes required for entering freshmen.
