Abstract
This paper provides one model of Political Science Graduate Pedagogical Training that incorporates high impact practices, and ongoing formalized mentoring to provide pedagogical training for effective instruction in a political science classroom with a diverse student population. We provide detail on three central elements of this process: 1) pedagogical course work, 2) supervised teaching, and 3) advanced training and job market preparation. We expect that this model can be modified based on the context and conditions (e.g. resources, expertise, placement record) of other departments with graduate programs, and will work as an example for how HIP and other research-backed practices can be used to inform graduate pedagogical course design. Enhancing the teaching skills of political science PhDs will promote a legacy of excellent undergraduate instruction in political science departments across the United States and internationally, while also advancing the career skills of PhDs regardless of their career path choice.
